Yogavita.org's philosophy

Our philosophy is to let people understand this amazing discipline called yoga and to enjoy its benefits. Yoga can help people achieve happier and healthier lives as well as peace of mind.

Our way of teaching is through a blend of flowing asanas or postures along with intense breathing and guided relaxation. We teach over 15 ways of breathing that are essential to changing the way you think and feel. We hope that our teaching will lead you into a deeper understanding of yourself and the world surrounding you. By having a stronger sense of who you are and less fear, you will deal with the ups and downs of life in a smarter way.

We have been featured at Channel 9 News (Washington D.C.)as well as in several publications (such as the Inter-American Development Bank´s magazine Chasqui and at MAYA's newsletter); we have also been featured in several international publications such as "Belleza y Estilo" and "La Semana Económica" magazines, and in Peru's "El Comercio" and "La República" newspapers. In addition, we have made presentations and workshops in several places in the US capital, Virginia as well as in South America.

BELOW ARE SOME QUESTIONS THAT MANY OF YOU PROBABLY HAVE AND THAT WE WANTED TO ANSWER

IS YOGA A RELIGION?

No, Yoga is a Sanskrit word which means "union": of body, mind and soul. It offers guidelines for all aspects of your life: postures & breathing techniques for your BODY; concentration for your MIND; and meditation for your SOUL. It also offers ethical guidelines in the Yamas or Niyamas - sort of the Hindu version of the Ten Commandments. But Yoga is not dogmatic. You can be any religion you want (or none) and practice it. What we can say is that yoga makes you closer to your spiritual part by making you go inwards, into your soul.

IS YOGA A SPORT?

No. Yoga is a non-competitive discipline that not only unites the mind and body but the spirit as well. Yoga works on one's physical part by mainly strengthening, stretching and relaxing the skeletal, muscular, glandular and nervous systems.

Mentally, it increases alertness and concentration. And, spiritually, it is a way of self-knowledge - a mirror to reflect the brightest and purest part of yourself. When we start to "dis-identify" with our thoughts and experience them just as thoughts and not as reality itself, then the "path to freedom" begins to unfold. And that path is as sweet as a ripe mango!

WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF BREATHING IN YOGA?

Life Energy is called "Prana". In sanskrit, the word for breath is the same as the word for life - prana. The first thing you do as you enter this world is to inhale. Your last act in this life is to exhale. When prana leaves the body, we die. The breath is a metaphor for life energy. In yoga, we seek to sustain life force as much as possible. The most significant way of doing this is through the practice of pranayama (yama=control) or breathing techniques.

"As more people in the Western Hemisphere learn about yoga and its benefits, they will incorporate it as part of their children's school curricula and in their lives in general. Because of our strong belief in yoga's positive impact on our bodies, minds and souls, we dedicate our lives to it".
